Curt Gowdy: 1919 - 2006

Williams swings....And there's a long drive to deep right field. That ball is going…going…and that ball is gone. A home run for Ted Williams in his last major league at bat. An American icon passes.  Curt Gowdy was one of those classic guys that we just don’t seem to have much of anymore.  He was a great sportscaster, the voice of the Boston Red Sox for 15 years, and a man who had a knack for being in the right place at the right time, and making those moments even more memorable by not getting in the way when he announced them. ...

7 Game Season

Tonight begins the 7 game season between my beloved Sox and the Bronx Buttplugs.  All tied up.  Both teams have a series against Tier-2 teams, and then 3 against each other next weekend (almost like Selig planned it that way).  The major factor (I hope) is that the Sox, with the best home record in the AL, have all 7 at home, whereas the Yanks are on the road for the final 7.  We’ll see how it pans out. Update:  Well it looks like the BoSox and Jays are rained out.  Postponed until tomorrow, day/night doubleheader.  I was almost mad.  Except...

Inching toward October

Hi.  My name is Scott, and I’m a Red Sox fan.  As the sponge guy says in “Fever Pitch”…God’s most pathetic creature. Those of you who have me on your IM list may have seen that I’ve taken to keeping running commentary on the AL East standings in my MSN message.  This is the time of year where I also begin to analyze every little thing, and go nuts in anticipation of October. October…seemed like a foregone conclusion a few weeks ago.  Now we aren’t so sure.  It’s 1.5 games up in the East, and ending the season with the bombers in...

Raffy...wtf man?

Dude…how could you?  I’m just sick now.  After all that “I have never used steroids” bullshit to congress too.  Man.  I grew up watching you, all those years in Texas…you were one of the stand-up guys we thought.  Bad enough you were pitching Viagra, but that we were willing to forgive.  Your 3000/500 no longer impresses, and you leave the fans with a bad taste in our mouths. I guess you yourself said it best when compared to Hank, Willie, and Eddie:  “I’m in a group with them now, but that doesn’t mean I belong in their class…” You damn sure...

Let there be Hockey!

And they’re back.  All is forgiven, even you Jeremy Roenick.  Just go play hockey next season.  I needs my Bruins. I do agree with this guy though.  Goodenow and Bettman both can fuck right off.  They did their best to ruin the sport, along with a handful of owners (one of which owns my team...). I’ve said my piece about the lockout and whatnot, I just want the puck to hit the ice come October and get on with it. Tags: Sports

PATRIOTS!

Well damned if this isn’t the best season ever for me as a sports fan.  Red Sox.  Auburn.  Patriots.  Bring on the Eagles. Tags: Sports

Googling Auburn's Plight...

Just for you Heather  (and DevHawk) So looking at my referrers, someone reached my site by googling: “AP rankings, Auburn, SEC toughest conference” and I am the #2 result…what that means to me?  People aren’t bitching enough about this grand injustice…or I’m bitching too much.  Either way…still bitter. About a week away from the games.  I’ll watch all the bowls, and I’ll be over it when it’s done.  Now…if only there were a way that both USC and OU could lose… :p   Tags: Sports

Basketball isn't doing it for me...where's my hockey?

I was trying to put the NHL lockout out of my mind, ignore it, pretend it isn’t happening, and that it’s just not hockey season yet.  It’s not working.  Especially after reading DevHawk's post today. Just like DevHawk, I agree with the owners largely on this issue.  I just can’t see hockey surviving without a salary cap.  We have to be honest with ourselves hockey fans…our sport just doesn’t have the draw of football, basketball, or baseball.  It’s a niche market.  Hockey is hard to watch on TV if you aren’t *really* into it.  There’s so much to the game that you...

Meet the Mets, Greet the Mets, Come on out and Pete the Mets

Memo to the Mets:  You can have him.  Enjoy accomodating the diva. I’ll never forget what Pedro did during his time in the Fens, but I’m not in the least bit sad, surprised, shocked, or chagrined to see him go.  Later! Petey has shown time and again that his ego is more fragile than his arm.  He wanted respect he said, but he takes this deal, which is about the money.  As Soxfan points out below, this has nothing to do with respect. What this is, is that this move is good for his career and he knows it.  Going back to the...

Boomer huh...

Well, according to various reports, the Sox have either signed or are on the verge of signing David Wells to a one or two year deal at the winter meetings. Boomer. I for one welcome our new lefty hard-drinking hard-living overlord. Wells gives us a solid lefty in the rotation, something we haven’t had in a while.  As a matter of fact, just sitting here, I can’t remember our last good lefty starter.  He’s up there in age, at 42, and this will likely be his last contract, but a swan song at Fenway would be a treat for sure. Wells isn’t that great...

BCS Woes, Redux

So, a couple of Trojans stopped by (Heather and DevHawk) and commented on my BCS Post.  No big surprise that they are content with this year’s outcome, after last year’s debacle. First, let me say that I don’t necessarily “begrudge” either USC or OK their positions.  However…wtf is with Cal not getting a spot?  That’s crap.  Pitt?  Really? BCS wouldn’t be so broken if there weren’t the guaranteed spots.  Leaving aside the issue of the national championship for a *brief* moment, let’s look at this (Rankings numbers are end-of-season): Rose Bowl:  Michigan vs. Texas Michigan – 9–2 (7–1).  AP Rank: 14.  USA Today/ESPN Rank: 13. ...

College Football Woes

Well, my Auburn Tigers did it, and it looks like they’ll be headed to the Sugar Bowl to take on the Hokies (sorry Bill). This, my friends, is bullshit.  Nothing against Oklahoma and USC, but really, why should there be three major conference undefeateds and one of them not have a shot at the title game?  Maybe I’m biased, but every college football fan knows that some conferences are harder than others.  Auburn has gone through more ranked teams that OK and USC.  Tennessee twice.  Georgia.  LSU.  Not to mention the major rivalry Iron Bowl against Alabama.  They would have beat...

BABE RUTH CAN BITE MY BAG!

27 years of frustration erased! For my father, 53 years of frustration erased. For Red Sox Nation, 86 years of frustration erased.   And we did it by beating the Yankees in historic fashion. And we did it by SWEEPING the "best team in baseball". The best team in baseball, ladies and gentlemen, is flying back to Boston for ONE BIG ASS PARADE.   2004 Red Sox, a grateful Nation thanks you from the bottom of our uplifted hearts. Tags: Sports

The Thing About Being a Citizen of Red Sox Nation

They killed my father and they're coming after me.  That's the thing.  I was indoctrinated into The Nation at a young age.  My dad was never hard-core, but it was always there.  I was born in Texas, but my dad and stepmom are Bostonians, and I lived up there a good portion of my life.  As a result, I've become a hard-core Sox/Bruins/Celtics fan, with a little of the Pats thrown in, although I can never abandon my Cowboys.  When your mother loves a sports team, like my mom did the Cowboys, you never let that go. So anyway, another year...
