A Quarter of VS2005/C# 2.0 and Team System

Scott Allen posted his experiences with VS 2005 and I thought I’d do the same. I’ve been using it in production on a mission critical project since the day RTM was available on MSDN.  Let that sink in for you.  Maybe that kind of bravado is what brought me to having a nervous breakdown!  But Sahil insisted that it was the right thing to do, and since in October I wasn’t more than a few hundred lines of 100% convertible framework code into this project…I said “fuck it, let’s go.”.  Hey, Ho, 2.0. First and foremost, 2.0 dropped weeks of work off the project.  Like,...

Changing your Team Foundation Server settings outside of Visual Studio

Ran into this last night where one of my team members was trying to connect over the VPN and couldn’t resolve the team server name, and couldn’t do anything with the team server settings in Visual Studio as a result.  The problem with resolution is a DNS thing on the VPN and not really important, what needed to happen though was that he needed to be able to change the server from FQDN to NetBIOS name, but couldn’t do it in the UI because apparrently if you HAVE a server defined it will try to connect to that server anytime...

A Lesson in RTFM...TFS Beta 3 (Finally) Set Up.

Seriously…read it.  Also read the readme and known issues.  Dude I’m really not kidding, READ THE F***** MANUAL. Because if you, like me, do not read the manual, it may take you a day and a half to do what ultimately takes about 2 hours. I didn’t pay attention to the SQL 2005 Installation part.  I got the September CTP and just selected everything to install.  The manual says to select “SQL Server Database Services, Analysis Services, and Reporting Services, and then click Next”.  I selected everything.  And it barfed on installing Integration Services.  but a SQL 2005 barf install still takes...

Removing/Reinstalling Sharepoint Services 2.0?

Anyone help me out with this?  I’m trying to get TFS beta 3 up and running, and like a jackass I only partially RTFM, and missed the part about installing SharePoint Services with the “Server Farm” option.  Now TFS complains that Sharepoint isn’t configured as expected, and if I uninstall Sharepoint from add/remove then try to reinstall it no longer gives me the option for Server Farm, just reinstalls to the same way I had it before. Little help? Update:  Okay, nevermind.  After doing the uninstall of SharePoint you need to also uninstall the SQL instance that it created.  Then it “starts...

TFS Beta 3 Ready to go...I guess...

According to Buck Hodges, they’ve signed off on TFS B3.  Make sure you have the September CTP of SQL 2005, and the RC of VS2005. Guess "simultaneous" doesn’t mean what it used to eh?  And Buck says give it a few days to be on subscriber downloads.   Speaking of subscriber downloads…the links for it now take you back to subscriptions because the site is throwing some sort of error when you try to go to the downloads page.  So much for getting those Vista Beta 1 bits… Tags: TFS
