Well, my Auburn Tigers did it, and it looks like they’ll be headed to the Sugar Bowl to take on the Hokies (sorry Bill).
This, my friends, is bullshit. Nothing against Oklahoma and USC, but really, why should there be three major conference undefeateds and one of them not have a shot at the title game? Maybe I’m biased, but every college football fan knows that some conferences are harder than others. Auburn has gone through more ranked teams that OK and USC. Tennessee twice. Georgia. LSU. Not to mention the major rivalry Iron Bowl against Alabama. They would have beat Florida too if Florida hadn’t bitched out on playing Auburn for the next 4 years. The SEC is a stronger conference than the Big 12, or the PAC 10. Of all the conferences, I would put up the SEC schedule against any other, with the exception of the ACC, as the toughest in the nation. But we’re going to be #3.
We will probably end up #2 after the Orange Bowl produces a loser. This is fucked up too. First of all, I would welcome the chance to play Oklahoma or USC. In a neutral territory of a bowl game, I put Campbel, Williams, and Brown against all comers. Bring it. But that won’t happen. Maybe we get voted to share the national championship, but what the shit is that? Shared championship…oxymoron. And if we do finish #2, what sense does that make? I would be pissed if I were whomever loses the Oklahoma/USC game. If you lose the championship game, you should be #2. Second best. That’s how that sort of thing works.
And playoffs aren’t answer, because first of all, you can’t rightly make these kids go through a playoff system. It’s not right. They are there for school. They play enough as it is, and they are tired. The exceptional ones are taking their careers into their hands with each extra game. Not to mention, it would be just as arbitrary to choose the playoff field. How many teams are you going to have? How many games? Say there’s a 16 team playoff. How do you pick the 16? What if the teams ranked 15, 16, and 17 have the same records? Someone will be left out.
Bottom line I guess is there is no good way to fix the college football championship situation. And that sucks. Because Auburn is getting likely left out in the cold this year, and I challenge you to find a college football fan that doesn’t think they are equally matched if not better with USC and Oklahoma.
