Well, another year come and gone.  I will now take a look back at the highlight reel from my year:

  • I got fired for the first time ever in March.  It was awesome!  My boss was a psycho, and I intend to feature him in a blog series.
  • For the first time since 2002 I didn’t work for a company that went out of business.
  • I got a great new job working for a corporate pathology lab, where I have a real opportunity to shape the company.  Expect more blogs about this in the upcoming year.
  • I started blogging.

Huge year in sports for me…first and foremost, I am the proud fan of the WORLD CHAMPION BOSTON RED SOX!!!  My Auburn Tigers went undefeated (still bitter for 3 more days about the bowl scene).  My Patriots A)Won the Super Bowl and B)Set a NFL record for ridiculous win streaks.  Hockey is locked out, which is pretty frustrating.  Oh…and did I mention the RED SOX?  Other sports news of note – Barry and Jason took steroids…nobody was surprised.  The Olympic division of the NBA fell on their asses…more proof that today’s NBA is nothing more than streetball, and there is no team game like there was when the first (the only) Dream Team played.  The international symbol for “choking” was replaced by a newer, more recognizeable symbol…the Yankees’ Logo.  And probably what would have been the most impressive sports news of the year had it not been for the RED SOX, Lance Armstrong!  What a pimp.

Huge year in games too.  World of Warcraft.  Halo 2.  Half-Life 2.  Doom 3.  EverQuest 2.  Grand Theft Auto:  San Andreas.  And a whole host of other games that put Star Wars Galaxies to shame.

We had an election this year.  The right man got the job.  In my opinion.  Your mileage may vary on the election, but once again we had a democratic election and the power structure of the country was decided without bloodshed, which is more than can be said of other places in the world…and that’s not insignificant.

There was no shortage of tragedy this year, especially in light of the recent events in southeast Asia.  Closer to home, my area got spanked by hurricanes.  The worst hurricane season for Florida in like…ever.

Justice was done this year, in the form of the Scott Peterson trial.  For all that’s out of control about our judicial system, it’s nice to get confirmation that it still works as designed when everyone does their job right.

We lost several great Americans this year.  President Reagan will especially be missed, and remembered as a hero.  But even more notable are all the men and women who died this year in Iraq.  They made the ultimate sacrifice for what they thought was right.  And if you don’t think it’s right, that’s fine, that’s your opinion and you’re welcome to it.  But don’t dare dishonor their memories by saying they died in vain.  The implementation and exit strategy may be sub-par, but that’s not their fault.  The went over there to free an oppressed people, and they did their jobs well.

Oh yeah…and one of the most evil dictators around is now deposed and in jail.

So that’s the year as I’m going to remember it.  Some good.  Some bad.  But to keep things in perspective for myself, this year brought me continued health, my son’s 7th birthday, a good job, good friends.  I and everyone I know and love made it through the hurricanes with at worst some home damage.  I recently became an uncle to a beautiful baby girl, and my sister made it through the delivery with no issues.  So all things considered, the year could have been much worse, and I’m thankful that I can look back on 2004 as a good year.  Here’s hoping the same for 2005.

Happy New Year everyone!
