Wow...non-prime time ad spot bid-time. Yay. More vibrator commercials.

For non-prime time stuff, if you want ad time on network TV you bid for blocks.  If your bid is high for a given slot then your commercial gets in.  This leads to a phenomenon that you’re all familiar with, the same commercial on every commercial break for 4 hours, sometimes even the same commercial consecutively. So I just saw the same commercial thrice, every other spot.  It’s a 15 second spot, and…well…it’s about a vibrator. Now I’m not such a prude that I’m offended by the commercial’s content or object.  Tampon commercials, frankly, are more offensive.  It was really very tasteful...

GoogleTalk First Impressions

After briefly conversing with a coworker, here’s my first impressions. The GoodMinimalist.  I hate the teen-ified feel of MSN and AIM.  What the fuck is a nudge and why would I ever do it in adult conversation?Input buffer – seems to not have a reasonable limit.  I hate copy/pasting into MSN only to have half of it cut off, and have to go back and copy the other half.  GoogleTalk buffer test was the entire home page of whatever blog I was reading at the time.  Nice.Voice – I need to test this with someone later when I get my headphones.Custom...

Changing the default admin folder location in Community Server

Applications that insist their administrative stuff runs in a folder called /admin do not play well with Interland.  Community Server is one of these applications. My friend and coworker Jason was updating the website of his band, TheBitters.  Prior to now they had a site with a good design (Jason’s pretty solid with the graphical stuff) but poor updateability.  The image gallery was outdated, the news and show schedule as well.  We just put in a Community Server installation at the office for IT communications and an internal blog, and he thought that would be the perfect framework for the band...

Gamestuff and missed opportunities.

Well, not that anyone really cares, but I just joined up with GameFly to a) get a chance to play a few games that I wanted to, 2) get a little variety in my games without spending a ton of money, and iii) to try it out. I’ve been with NetFlix since January of 2003, and I’ve loved it.  In those 2 and a half years I’ve gone to Blockbuster 3 total times.  Twice because they were having a pre-viewed DVD sale, and once to return something that the ex had rented for the boy.  I have a nice queue rotation system, 5...

Want to get an inside view of the business end of a distributed startup?

Check out the Project FAZR blogs over here.  We are tasking each other with making the process of starting a distributed software company as transparent and open as possible.  We are blogging the mechanics of creating this company for many reasons.  One is to keep a multi-sided journal of the monster we are creating.  Another is to do a little viral marketing and buzz building.  We all have our own goals as well, mine is to show the community the guts of a business startup, hopefully to help or inspire others to strike out on their own.  If you subscribe to our feed, you will...

As you know now, I’ve been accepted into Project FAZR.  I’m totally excited about it and have already jumped into the fray today.I plan to keep this blog mostly FAZR-Free in favor of my Project FAZR blog, where I will be clueing you in on my experiences and the process of building a totally virtual company.  So I recommend you subscribe to that or the feed for the aggregate blog site for all the FAZR blogs.  You can get the inside scoop from the different perspectives of the 7 of us.

My apologies to Kasia

For those of you who didn’t wade through the comment war on my earlier post.  I would like to apologise to Kasia for A) being imprecise and spelling her name as Kaisa several times and 2) Making it seem like I was singling her out, attacking her, or doing anything more than using her post as a building block in my rant.  I actually had seen the google-bomb thing a few times, also on the Bad Astronomy blog and elsewhere.  Just hers was the one I was reading at the time I decided to make a post.  Think of it as the...

Project FAZR

Some may have already seen Ryan's post to the effect, but I have been chosen as the 7th member of the Project FAZR team.  For a little more information and background check out this post.  Also, to monitor the progress of this idea, check the Project FAZR blogs.I must say it’s an honor to be chosen by my peers.  I’m joining Ryan, Raymond Lewallen, Brady Gaster, Jason Mauss, Tobin Titus and Erik Porter on this team, and I tell you, along with the NTeam team (you’re one groovy baby…baby) and my team at work, one developer has never been more priveleged to work with...

Bunch of easily led automatons...

*****Disclaimer***** There is a good chance that some of you reading this will get angry and unsubscribe from my blog,  or not hire me for a job, or blackmail me, or some other nonsense, not because I know anyone will do this for sure, but I’m just playing the numbers here..  I’m sorry if it has to come to that over a philosophical disagreement, I like to think of all of you as my peers in intellectualism, but the following represents a viewpoint that some of you may not like.  And I’m okay with that.  And on my end, even if we...

Backup Del.icio.us with Excel

Found via the MAKE: Blog, this handy Excel hack is great for backing up your del.icio.us bookmarks locally.  It seems weird at first, but I thought since I am moving my bookmarks out of the browser to this central location, which has been far more productive for me, how am I covered if del.icio.us goes down?  This is how.  Run this once a whatever and add it to your normal backup scheme.

Why would they let you smoke in rehab?

I was just watching 28 Days with Sandra Bullock.  She wasn’t here with me on my couch mind you (I wish), but rather in the movie.  If you haven’t seen it, she’s a drunk and gets sent to rehab, and goes through the whole rehab thing.  The movie was actually very good, I really enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would.  Also, it showed that Sandra can in fact act.  Fairly well in fact.  Who’da thunk it. The reason for the title of this post is that these people were all in rehab.  No drugs, no booze, not...

NDepend and CruiseControl.NET Integration. And undocumented goodness...

I’ve never seen a more timely blog entry.  Like that episode of Family Guy where Joe is down about being handicapped, and a commercial comes on for the special peoples games, and then the news says “Coming up, our expose on conveniently timed television shows, but first, watch out for that skateboard Peter” and then Peter trips on a skateboard…. So…rambling…oh yeah.  Earlier I was discussing my build environment, and I was a little down about NDepend not being a default integration item, and rather than putting in the work I used an <externalLink> in ccnet.config to link to the NDepend...

It's not easy getting to green! NAnt, CCNet, and delivery.

Finally!  My day-long odyssey is over.  I have a full and complete and successful build! First, let me just say, if you are doing .NET projects of any non-trivial size, you absolutely must read Expert .NET Delivery Using NAnt and CruiseControl.NET.  It is absolutely one of the most well put-together, timely, and useful software books I have read in a long time.  As I was reading it, literally almost page by page, I was thinking “yes, I do want to implement something like that”. Moving on…I had dabbled in CruiseControl.Net before, got a basic build system up and running, and left it...

Raffy...wtf man?

Dude…how could you?  I’m just sick now.  After all that “I have never used steroids” bullshit to congress too.  Man.  I grew up watching you, all those years in Texas…you were one of the stand-up guys we thought.  Bad enough you were pitching Viagra, but that we were willing to forgive.  Your 3000/500 no longer impresses, and you leave the fans with a bad taste in our mouths. I guess you yourself said it best when compared to Hank, Willie, and Eddie:  “I’m in a group with them now, but that doesn’t mean I belong in their class…” You damn sure...

Why Switch to Yukon? (I think I'm boycotting all recent release names)

Okay.  I’m too lazy to do the work myself right now, so I want you guys to give me compelling reasons to switch from 200 to 2005 SQL.  Something I can grab on to and say “YES, THAT MAKES IT SO WORTH IT!!” and then pitch to the suits.  Links are good too.
