September 2005 Entries
Seriously…read it. Also read the readme and known issues. Dude I’m really not kidding, READ THE F***** MANUAL.
Because if you, like me, do not read the manual, it may take you a day and a half to do what ultimately takes about 2 hours.
I didn’t pay attention to the SQL 2005 Installation part. I got the September CTP and just selected everything to install. The manual says to select “SQL Server Database Services, Analysis Services, and Reporting Services, and then click Next”. I selected everything. And it barfed on installing Integration Services. but a SQL 2005 barf install still takes...
Anyone help me out with this? I’m trying to get TFS beta 3 up and running, and like a jackass I only partially RTFM, and missed the part about installing SharePoint Services with the “Server Farm” option. Now TFS complains that Sharepoint isn’t configured as expected, and if I uninstall Sharepoint from add/remove then try to reinstall it no longer gives me the option for Server Farm, just reinstalls to the same way I had it before.
Little help?
Update: Okay, nevermind. After doing the uninstall of SharePoint you need to also uninstall the SQL instance that it created. Then it “starts...
Tonight begins the 7 game season between my beloved Sox and the Bronx Buttplugs. All tied up. Both teams have a series against Tier-2 teams, and then 3 against each other next weekend (almost like Selig planned it that way). The major factor (I hope) is that the Sox, with the best home record in the AL, have all 7 at home, whereas the Yanks are on the road for the final 7. We’ll see how it pans out.
Update: Well it looks like the BoSox and Jays are rained out. Postponed until tomorrow, day/night doubleheader. I was almost mad. Except...
In which I discuss the folly of test memes, yet do them anyway. Your IQ Is 140 Your Logical Intelligence is Below AverageYour Verbal Intelligence is GeniusYour Mathematical Intelligence is GeniusYour General Knowledge is Genius A Quick and Dirty IQ Test Okay. Let’s talk about this before you run off and do it. Does anything seem….wrong? (cue the music to “which of these things is not like the other? Which of these things does not belong?)My logical intelligence is below average. I got a 140 on a fake IQ test, where my math, verbal, and general knowledge were “genius”, I write...
When the levee breaks, we’ll have no place to stay. But just 4 days ago, the mayor of New Orleans was all (paraphrased, of course) “come on back, we’re fine, it’s a good idea. Don’t listen to the president, or the coast guard guy in charge of relief operations when they say it’s not safe yet…they’re idiots. Only I may predict the weather”.What an asshat. But where’s the outcry about his neglect? Where’s all the blog entries about how stupid he is? No…it’s only popular and cool to talk about how stupid the President is.Don’t you know that we have a secret...
Do you have what it takes?
According to Buck Hodges, they’ve signed off on TFS B3. Make sure you have the September CTP of SQL 2005, and the RC of VS2005.
Guess "simultaneous" doesn’t mean what it used to eh? And Buck says give it a few days to be on subscriber downloads.
Speaking of subscriber downloads…the links for it now take you back to subscriptions because the site is throwing some sort of error when you try to go to the downloads page. So much for getting those Vista Beta 1 bits…

Continuing my efforts to educate my team on the new features of 2.0, here’s what I had to say about Partial Types. (Maybe I don’t “get” partial types…they seem more like they would be sources of confusion than actually useful…)
One of the first things you will likely notice, when you go to create a new form (win or web) is that the “code behind” is different. Incomplete. Or, put in the manner of the Talking Heads:
And you may find yourself, creating a new WinForm;
And you may find yourself, looking in the Code-Behind
And you may find definitions, in another part of...
Found over here at the Cerebral Kitchen. CoyoteBoy (:P) is slightly more “social permissive” and slightly less “economic permissive”. On the celebrity screen I’m smack in the middle of The Donald’s forehead. My problem with these tests…I read the questions too literally I think. Or they are designed like that. But many questions, were they one word different, would yield a different result. Also, I always feel the skewing. Maybe that’s by design, and if you lean toward one side or another you read the questions as skewed. Either way, I fall about where I expect I would. I used to be...

Hi. My name is Scott, and I’m a Red Sox fan. As the sponge guy says in “Fever Pitch”…God’s most pathetic creature.
Those of you who have me on your IM list may have seen that I’ve taken to keeping running commentary on the AL East standings in my MSN message. This is the time of year where I also begin to analyze every little thing, and go nuts in anticipation of October.
October…seemed like a foregone conclusion a few weeks ago. Now we aren’t so sure. It’s 1.5 games up in the East, and ending the season with the bombers in...
Bah.I got all jazzed up tonight to play with something new. But alas, no bits of Sparkle to play with, so I decided to go with the next best thing, the Windows Workflow Foundation (WinWF).Download, install…nothing. Fuck. Looks like right now it’s only working on 2005 beta 2, and not on the RC. For me, it says it’s installed (in Add/Remove Programs) but I don’t have the project types that I’m supposed to have. For others, it appears to throw a Package Load error (Microsoft.Workflow.VSDesigner.DesignerPackage) on VS 2005 startup. Not finding anything on any blogs, or the forums, and it’s too...
WHEN???????? I needs it. It burns us.
As I mentioned previously I’m educating my team on the new 2005/2.0 stuff, and extending that here. This is not new information, but as they say on TV during the summer, “if you haven’t seen it, it’s new to you”. (and if it’s not new to you, and I get it totally wrong, please tell me. I’m still learning this stuff too.)
One of the new features of C# in 2.0 is what’s called “Generics”. What is a generic? Essentially it boils down to generalization in design.
Think about a collection of some object. In a structure such as a Linked List. Very...
So all of a sudden Sahil is directing technology at my company.Okay, not really. But his post yesterday about 1.1 vs 2.0 prompted me to take action today. FUD be damned, we’re making the jump to VS2005/.net 2.0! Now before you go thinking that I made a major platform decision based on one guy’s blog post, don’t go there. I’m not that impulsive (although were I to base decisions on one guy’s input, Sahil would be on the short list of guys I would listen to). I’ve been thinking long and hard for months about how much I wish we were...
Are any of you or do any of you know a solid BizTalk pimp? I need a conversation, someone I can ask a few questions over email or IM or whatever…Bueller? Bueller?
Just watched most of today’s keynote. I say most becasue it’s daggum 3 hours long. Next year, I gotta get to PDC. It’s the Microsoft developer conference. No question. This year I’m getting to go to VSLive! Orlando, which is awesome, will be my first actual dev conference, but I’m going to do what I can to swing PDC next year (and a VSLive!).My thoughts on the keynote:Right off the bat, BillG strikes a chord. He says we are always looking to “build our software on top of a richer platform” and “richen up” the user experience, making it easier,...
Okay…The Simpsons began it’s 17th season tonight. Let me just say….barf.OMG end it already. Please put this damn show out of its misery.Let’s get this straight, the only place you will find a bigger Simpsons fan than me (not of the lunatic style) is a few offices down from me, but if you are a real fan, you can surely agree that seasons 11 – 16 could be condensed taking one or two shows from each to make one season of the caliber of seasons 1–8. The writing is terrible the last few years. The subtle satire and insider allusions...
Blame optionsScalper. He starts talking about “teh cube” and it piques my interest. Then I see a little more cube stuff out there. So I break down. 2 weeks ago I go out to Toys R Us and pick up a Rubik’s Cube. Did you know that the cube debuted 25 years ago? 1980 baby! Now I had never played with a cube for more than 10 minutes at a time previously, and had never solved one. I solved it that day. Took about 30 minutes as I deciphered the algorithm found here. It’s a great starter algorithm. Within a couple...

And go here if you want to know more about Project FAZR.
I’ve been biting my tongue on Katrina because I don’t want to put even more bile out there surrounding something so catastrophic. Some of what’s going on surrounding this tragedy is just making me beyond angry. I’m amazed that the government couldn’t magically fix everything within 4 days of this natural disaster. Must be because they’re stupid, lazy and racist, because they clearly have godlike power over the situation. You people make me sick.Okay…well I just deleted 5 paragraphs of rant about the people that are using this disaster as a soapbox from which to spew their bullshit political and...
Okay. As I already stated, I was in Orlando this week for a training conference for an imaging/document management vendor. The conference was extremely well done, including the company renting out Marvel Island at Universal Islands of Adventure and providing 0–minute wait times on the Incredible Hulk, an open bar, and 4 star catered food. For some, the mathematical combination of those three things = an oral subtraction of the products of the latter two. And that are gross.
So, on to the point. The Disney Swan and Dolphin resorts. The location of my conference this week and VSLive! Orlando. Here’s...
Sahil, as always, is right on target.I went to the crappiest place on earth this week, arrived on Disney property Monday morning, returned home this afternoon. The time in between will be blogged about later. In that time, gas prices on Disney property rose over 40 cents. Gas prices at home (Ocala, FL, hour north of Orlando) up almost 50 cents. OMG, WTF. Pwn3d.
