Hi. My name is Scott, and I’m a Red Sox fan. As the sponge guy says in “Fever Pitch”…God’s most pathetic creature.
Those of you who have me on your IM list may have seen that I’ve taken to keeping running commentary on the AL East standings in my MSN message. This is the time of year where I also begin to analyze every little thing, and go nuts in anticipation of October.
October…seemed like a foregone conclusion a few weeks ago. Now we aren’t so sure. It’s 1.5 games up in the East, and ending the season with the bombers in the fens for three games. Anything but a lock. And with the way Cleveland is going, let’s just say that your likely candidate for the AL wild card is either Cleveland or Chicago (they seemed like a foregone conclusion a month ago too…) and if Oakland, The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (that is so ghetto…), the Bronx Bombers, and the Fenway Faithful want to play in October, they’re gonna have to pull off the division win. Since the Yankees and Sox have finished 1–2 in the east (respectively) for 7 straight years, there’s one more thing we’d like to reverse this year. But we’ll see. Pitching is a concern. Kapler is gone and Damon isn’t 80%, Manny is slumping (in September!), and Papi is carrying the load with no real hope of winning the MVP he deserves. We’ll see.
About Fever Pitch. Pretty good movie I think. Jimmy Fallon actually funny in this one. There’s a bonus. I of course bought the super fantastic just for Red Sox fans edition, and pointed a fellow Sox fan (found in Ocala, FL!) to it at Best Buy when he had the standard version in hand. The best part about the movie though is that it was done by Sox fans (that would be the Farelly Brothers) and so as a true long-suffering member of The Nation I could feel the story. The scene where they talk about “the curse” (no longer capitalized) at the park got me all riled up. And the October scenes, when everyone else is concentrating on the climax of the love story, I’m intensely into the game footage, on the edge of my seat, taking many of the same mannerisms I did when watching the same games last year, prompting my roommate to ridicule me. Oh well. great movie. I guess. I kinda forget all the non-sox stuff…
Home stretch. Apologies to those who arent’ prepared to hear me talk about baseball. It will all be over soon (then it’s on to HOCKEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
