Jason Bentley posted this dealy here that calculates what your blog is “worth”.  According to this, I pwn Jason :P by a few grand:

My blog is worth $14,678.04.
How much is your blog worth?

It takes me back to a lesson I learned from my Dad a long time ago.  I used to be obsessed with my baseball cards, got a Beckett’s every month, looked up all my stuff, and bragged about how much they were worth.  I did the same with comic books.  I was too young and inexperienced at the time to understand the cyclical nature of markets, and how collectible goods “markets” have their own cycle as well.  Comics and sports cards had a boom in the late 80s and early 90s, and I only saw that particular reference point.  But anyway, I thought I was rich.  So my dad says to me “a thing is only worth what someone will pay you for it”.  I kind of shrugged that off at the time, the words stuck with me, but the meaning didn’t hit right away.

There was a comics/collectibles store up the road from my house, and I was going to sell some of my collection to have some cash.  I was only you know, like 13 or whatever, no job, no money.  So I ride my bike up there, and the guy was willing to buy *some* of my stuff for pennies on the dollar.  I was very much “wtf?  kthxbye”.  This was like ‘92/’93, toward the end of that particular market cycle, and my stuff was now worthless pretty much.  At that point I started to understand what my dad was telling me, and I think it’s the single most important money lesson to ever learn, and one that you need to teach the next generation.  It is so simple, but it affects everything, stock market, sales professionals, your groceries and gas, and it happens on a very micro level.  A thing is only worth what someone will pay you for it.

If anyone wants to pay me 14K for my blog…send an email.  Seriously.  No takers?  kthxbye.
