Get Back to Work

Everyone wants their big break but is anyone ready for it?

Let’s say you were introduced to the exact right person to put you, whatever you do, in a position to take the next big leap in your career. Let’s say you figured out how to meet this person, pulled all your strings, played your network like a grand piano, and got the meeting. Are you ready?

Do you have your polished spec scripts? Have they been rewritten? Are they tight? Is there more than one, so you have an answer to the question “what else do you have?”

Do you have your polished 15 minute set? A strong 10? A solid 5, even?

Is your novel done and edited and ready to be published? Will people care about the characters? Are the stakes high enough?

Is your product ready for users? Can you put it out for beta? Are you mature enough to handle the feedback and adapt?

Have you been up on stage or in front of camera enough times to know you’re not going to choke when you’re at that big audition?

Are you out there? Are you helping your friends succeed? Are you making new friends? Are you giving without agenda, so you can receive without guilt?†

Is it marketable? Will people want it? Have you given it all you have? Is it powered by your blood? Can it go outside during the day?*

Quit trying so hard to sneak your foot in the door. When you have something to bring to the table, start knocking. They’ll let you in.

Until then, get back to work.

†Applies to oral sex and all other human interactions.

*If the answers to the last two are “yes”, then “no”, it may be a vampire. I’m not judging.
